TECHNIQUES - PLY-SPlit Braiding

Sarakatsani ply-split darning

During the day you will be introduced to the decorative Ply-Split Darning technique that was used by the Sarakatsani people of Macedonia up to the beginning of the 20th century. Following an introduction to the origins and traditional use of the bands, you will be shown some contemporary uses for the technique and the design possibilities will be discussed. You will make sample pieces using cotton or linen cords.

The tutor will supply cords, yarn and darning needles, but do bring 3, 4 or 5mm gripfids if you have them. This course is suitable for both beginners and more advanced students. Ply-Split Braiding books by Julie Hedges and gripfids will be available to buy.

Each student brings:  Notebook and pen; tape measure; small scissors; 3, 4 or 5mm Gripfids, if you have them (I can supply); darning needle, if you have one (I can supply)

Ply-Split braiding in  POT and SCOT to make a small dish

You will be introduced to working in Plain Oblique Twining,  POT and Single Course Oblique Twining,  SCOT in adjacent panels to make a small dish. By working with the two methods side-by-side, panels of varying textures and sizes can be made. By working in both linen and cotton cords the distinct panels can be emphasized.

Each student brings:  Notebook and pen; tape measure; small scissors;  4 or 5mm Gripfids, if you have them (I can supply).

Ply split brooch and necklace

I have designed this brooch and necklace inply-split braiding. The brooch material is Japanese paper yarn and the necklace is made of linen and metallic threads. The paper yarn makes a strong and beautiful curve. These can be made aswall decorations and other accessories.

Each student brings:  Please bring a needle or gripfid, which is a ply-split braiding tool. Those who don't have one can borrow or purchase one (made in Japan) from me.

 Materials fee:  Twisted cord, metal fittings: Dkr. 200. Gripfid Dkr. 50.

I have designed this bracelet in ply-split braiding, in a single technique. It is very easy to make, but very beautiful. Cords will be made with silk, linen, and cotton.

Each student brings:  Please bring a needle or gripfid, which is a ply-split braiding tool. Those who don't have one can borrow or purchase one (made in Japan) from me.

 Materials fee:  Twisted cord, Dkr. 100; gripfid Dkr. 50.

 

 Helicoid/Spiral structure in Ply split braiding

Learn to make these helicoid/spiral constructions using 2- or 4-ply cords, in plain oblique twining (POT). Helicoid means having the form of a flat coil or a flattened spiral. The technique ply-split braiding is used in the making of Camel belts in western India. The technique is on the decline and textile fiber artists are using this versatile technique for their creations. The technique can be used to construct bags, belts, containers and wearable dresses. This workshop  is an introduction to construct 3 dimensional sculptural works. For advanced students.

Each student brings: scissors, measuring tape, notebook, sticky tape or masking tape

Materials fee: Dkr. 180; this fee includes all materials: cotton cords for constructing the helicoid, as well as working notes.
