Sprang

Sprang is a method for creating braided structures.

The threads are fixed at both ends, so most often they are set on a frame. Working the braid at one end of the threads results in a mirror-image braid at the other end.

A variety of structures can be produced in this manner, including interlinking, interlacing, and intertwining. Earliest examples of this technique date to 1500 BCE, found in Scandinavia. The technique was known to the ancient Scythians, Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. It was also known to people in South America.

Most commonly made items were small, such as bags or bonnets, but longer items such as belts have been found. It is postulated that the tight-fitting garments depicted by ancient Greeks as well as the vertically-striped leggings of the Renaissance were made using the sprang technique.
